3rd year project

Robot Project

In 3rd year at UCT I was put into a group of 4 and we were instructed to design and build an autonomous robot that would be able to start following a line on a green light, then count perpendicular lines and stop after a pre-set number of lines and grip a rope hanging in front of it and pull it as far as possible. The robots were judged on speed at which it gets to the end line and how far it could pull the rope attached to a load that gets heavier as it is pulled. After all there is no fun if its not a competition.

Final Year Project (UCT)

Final Year Project

In my final year at UCT I was tasked to design the telemetry for a company called Impact-Free Water. Their goal is to desalinate water after pumping salt water onto land harnessing wave energy. One can download the report for this project by clicking the button above this text.

I designed a PCB using EagleCad, and was responsible for the choice of Pressure and Flow sensors that was to be used in the project. This was to be connected to the existing data logging system that was already installed off shore on the pump rig.

I also worked with a college who was designing a GSM module that was to be added to the Data logging system.

Here I used an Arduino microcontroller and programming environment due to cost and that this was already being used by the data logging system.

Systems
Projects

Some of the projects I have been involved in at National Packaging Systems are:

  • Research and development of NPS's 5 lane sachet machine with 5 auger/screw feed type depositing system.
  • Wiring/Installation/commissioning of 24 Sachet machines in Nigeria for Promasidor.
  • Sachet Machine install and commissioning for Promasidor Ghana
  • Sachet Machine install and commissioning for Kelpack Durban South Africa
  • Machine development, testing and commissioning of a 50 kg Weigher for Illovo Maragra, Mozambique.
  • Updating program and drawings for Form fill and seal machines using filling systems such as Auger, Flip Flop and Volumetric fillers.
NJCSI

Projects

Some of the projects I have been involved in at NJCSI are:

  • Ferro IO Upgrade - This involved mapping all IO (Around 500), including intrinsically safe IO, Creating all Wiring diagrams and electrical drawings using autocad and Commissioning.
  • Mpact DCS upgrade from ABB 800xA 5.1 to 6.1 which involved off site upgrade on our in-house servers, Factory testing, Updating all graphics, building new server rack and setting up 800xA.
  • ArcelorMittal Vanderbijl CCH System upgrade to 800xA 6.1. This involved building the server rack, installing 800xA from scratch and creating around 140 Graphics as well as setting up trends, User audit logs, trending, OPC AE and connecting to Existing OPC Gateway. This Upgrade was done live while the plant was running, After testing the system offline in simulation on in house servers. This system was Built with Full Network and server Redundancy, Any single component could fail and the system would still run.
  • Assisted with Sappi Stanger Pulp mill, Boilers and Tissue machine commissioning, here we were requested to assist with commissioning and loop checks, after upgrade to ABB DCS from outdated Teleperm system.
2022 Vulcan Coal Mine System 800xA Upgrade sv5.1 to sv6.1 and Minerals Library upgrade:

  • Supplied New redundant Servers and server racks - configured by NJCSI
  • Virtualized Current Servers into new servers virtual environment
  • Created new Virtual Machines - Windows 10 and Server 2019
  • Deployed new system off site, imported old projects, debugged issues created in upgrade process.
  • Switched over site system, upgraded controllers and setup all operator stations over a 3 day period.
  • 29 controllers - 4 redundant
  • 28 virtual machines
  • External OPC connectivity to PIM system
  • 2 Redundant Connectivity server pairs
  • Redundant aspect servers
  • Redundant domain Controller
  • 10 Engineering stations
  • 6 RDP Servers with Teminal services for multiple operator remote desktop  sessions

2023 Arcelormittal Vanderbijl PLC Upgrade

  • Designed 11 new panels with Redundant ABB AC904F controllers
  • The Design included a redundant profibus network, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and setting up TCP/IP comms for controllers to enable us to upgrade the system systematically without stopping the Central Compressor house from running and producting air for the plant. this included 5 low pressure compressors, 2 high presusre compressors and 4 auxilliary panels.
  • Created all electrical drawing for the before mentioned panels comprising of Power Distribution, Network layout and IO drawings, using autocad.
